Karate provides many important benefits to young people similar to those of traditional educational systems. These benefits are referred to in Japanese as:
  1. Mental development (chiiku):
Karate helps build concentration, focus, clear thinking and decisiveness.
  2. Moral development (tokuiku):
Karate helps instill patience, discipline, perseverance, understanding and open-mindedness. It builds confidence, develops self-control and increases calmness, courtesy and peace-all of which will aid everyone in every endeavor they undertake in life.

  3. Physical development (taiiku):
Karate is excellent for the heart, builds strong bones and bigger muscles, creates resilience, and makes the body less susceptible to sickness and injury.

Karate training
is profoundly helpful to young people in dealing with the many challenges facing them in today's society. It brings them balance and perspective at an age when these are needed most and provides a strong foundation to their character.

Unlike other karate organizations which often allow young children to start sparring (kumite), JKA of Palatine teaches Fundamental Sparring (Kiso Kumite) to avoid the possibility of injury. Sparring competitions are very popular not only among young boys & girls, but also among practitioners who have not yet reached the level of black belt. Due to the lengthy amount of time required before complete control of punches and kicks can be attained, Fundamental Sparring provides young people and pre-black-belt practitioners, who have not achieved technical proficiency, with an enjoyable and safe means of engaging, in competitive sparring.

Fundamental Sparring - primary objective is the development of well-timed responses. This is achieved first by learning how to control one's body movements and then by training to develop the "feel" necessary for effectively coordinating one's actions to match those of an opponent. Mr. Gonzalez teaches the basics (Kihon) that will teach the children as well as adults the basics fundamentals for the students to practice sparring.
