Sensei started his training in Okinawa when he was in the U.S. Army. He started training with the JKA of Chicago with Mr. Shojiro Sugiyama. He also took Instructors' courses from 1972 to 1993 with Mr. Hideteka Nishiyama, president of the AAKF. Mr. Gonzalez was the first American ever to receive the JKA Instructor Certificate in the Great Lakes Region. He also represented the United States from 1972 through 1985 as a member of the US team.
